Avengers: Endgame – Russo Bros On Utilizing Someone As Powerful As Captain Marvel

With Captain Marvel making her debut in the MCU just over a month prior to Avengers: Endgame being released, this will certainly be a big year for Marvel’s most powerful hero. We’ve known for some time that Carol Danvers is going to take the superpowers to the next level and even Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige has confirmed she is the most powerful hero to appear yet in the MCU.

This power level appears to be a bit easier to deal with in her solo movie, one would expect her powers will grow and evolve throughout that movie and finish off with a heroic end for our hero, but what about when she appears in Avengers: Endgame, we’ve known Carol will appear in that movie even before Nick Fury sent the page to her in the mid-credit stinger from Infinity War.

So how will directors Joe and Anthony Russo deal with adding in a brand new hero who can kick serious butt compared even to Earth’s mightiest heroes?

Speaking with CinemaBlend directors Joe and Anthony Russo discussed the difficulties of using a character so powerful and how they have tried to resolve this in Avengers: Endgame.

Joe Russo

“It’s always a concern of ours about overpowering characters, because the reason that people relate to these characters is their humanity, and that they’re flawed. And the reason we love working so much with Captain America was that he was limited, and his heart was his superpower, you know? So we’re all acutely aware of the dangers of having an overly powerful character. [But] we like sensitive storytelling, so… we found a thoughtful way through it.”

Anthony Russo

“That’s what kind of fires us up, I think, on a storytelling level, to be honest with you. Because when you do have powerful characters, you have to work that much harder to find their vulnerabilities and complexities. And Joe was mentioning on a storytelling level… and keep the stakes high! Because that’s where those characters are vulnerable. And actually, that makes for great drama, and you run in that direction. As storytellers, that’s been one of the most fun things we’ve had working with these characters is figuring out ways into them where they are vulnerable and they aren’t all powerful.”

Interesting, and until we see the movie it will be hard to gauge how well the Russos’ have managed to pull off this task.
