Avengers: Endgame – The Russos On That Alternate Vormir Scene And Black Widow Death

Avengers: Endgame marked a huge milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It proved that a serialized story could actually hold up across many movies, and that you could juggle tons of characters to ultimately create a fully-satisfactory story. But now, the world of the MCU is expanding even more. No longer will these stories be restricted to the big screen.

But before we move on into the world of Disney+, there are plenty of other questions regarding Endgame, like some of the alternate scenes we’ve seen on Disney+, including a different Vormir scene, which saw Hawkeye and Black Widow fending off some Thanos minions. In a recent interview, the Russos discussed the original scene, and why it didn’t work.

“That was another example where we began to smell this as we were executing it and confirmed it once we started to focus more on editing this,” Anthony Russo told the outlet. “We wanted to make it Black Widow’s final test with Hawkeye, a character who she’s been so close to, but the cuts all of a sudden became between them and a bunch of Thanos’ minions, who we didn’t have any relationship with.

“So we started talking about it in post-production with our editor Jeff Ford,” Russo continued. “We started spitballing: Isn’t the best version of this scene Hawkeye versus black widow? We have two heroes, neither of whom is gonna let the other die? They both know they have a mission that involves one of them sacrificing themselves and these characters had such a rich relationship throughout the MCU. So why don’t we just make the conflict between these two characters?”

They ultimately had to reshoot that scene for increased dramatic effect, and a larger focus on an intentional sacrifice on the part of Black Widow.

All in all, it was one heck of a way to go out for Black Widow, and Endgame was one heck of a way for the Russos to go out on. Though while they may be cashing in their Hollywood capital on original projects under their AGBO banner, they have expressed their willingness to return to the MCU. More recently, they mentioned Moon Knight as a potential character, but even before then, they gave some other ideas.

“I grew on up [John] Byrne’s X-Men run,” Joe Russo told the outlet back in September. “Ben Grimm was a favorite character growing up, the Thing. And Fantastic Four is now in the Marvel fold. There’s a lot. Silver Surfer is an amazing character. Going really big in cosmic would be a lot of fun. So there’s a lot of things that could attract us.”
