Whilst Avengers: Endgame has already broken all the opening weekend records going and the vast majority of fans have seen the movie at least once, we also have to remember that in reality it’s been out less than a week still, so the usual SPOILER applies if you have not yet had the chance to see the Endgame.

We all remember that Hulk had some issues in Infinity War after being badly defeated by Thanos, and then refused to come out to play. Then in Endgame we find out that Banner and Hulk have merged into one person, which we call Professor Hulk. It turns out that originally this change for Hulk was supposed to happen in Infinity War rather than Endgame. The writers of both these movies Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus recently spoke with the New York Times and here is what they said about Hulk.
Markus: There was a time when Banner became Smart Hulk in the first movie. It was a lot of fun, but it came at the wrong moment. It was an up, right when everyone else was down.
McFeely: It happened in Wakanda. His arc was designed like, I’m not getting along with the Hulk, the Hulk won’t come out. And then they compromise and become Smart Hulk.
Markus: We were like, but he’s Smart Hulk in the next movie. So that diner scene [in Endgame], was like, O.K., how do we smash right into that without scenes of him in a lab, gene-splicing?
McFeely: Oh, I wrote scenes in a lab. Now it’s just him eating pancakes and I think it generally works.
Markus: The whole thing rides on Rudd going, “I’m so confused.”
I totally agree that showing Hulk already in that situation was better than going and showing us him being created in a lab, but I still don’t think Hulk quite got as many hero moments as the other original Avengers. I can’t be the only one who wanted to see Hulk fighting Thanos again, with a bit more combat skills, like Black Widow had been teaching him some moves. It really worked well when they showed how Cap had adapted to modern fighting techniques in The Winter Soldier.

At the same time, I have said before that I really like rage Hulk more than smart Hulk. I like the idea of him being an uncontrollable variable that even the other Avengers would struggle against if he goes off the rails. I’d have loved to see Hulk getting really angry just before that final battle and having a rage out moment where he just grew I size and strength and went a bit mental on those troops as he did in the original Avengers movie. Hey, I’m just a Hulk fanboy and for me, he was at is best in Avengers, taking down mammoth monsters and swatting ships out the sky.
It’ll be interesting to see where they decide to go next with Hulk as the MCU moves into a new era, will he remain as smart Hulk or will we ever get Bruce Banner back? Let us know what you’d like to see from the Hulk going forward in the usual spot below.
