With every Marvel Studios film, the filmmakers are faced with the monumental task of one-upping the previous one. Sure, occasionally, they’re able to reset the scope a bit, but the general trend on the horizon seems to be going up and up. Even Doctor Strange, a standalone film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is opening the doors to even greater possibilities.
Of course, Avengers: Infinity War is setting itself up to be the most ambitious entry in the franchise yet, with the potential to bring in every living Avenger into the picture — plus the Guardians of the Galaxy. With the latter group likely headed to Earth, you know that Tony Stark himself will likely be getting more paranoid than ever about extraterrestrial threats — threats that maybe the Avengers themselves won’t be able to handle without a plan.
Enter the Illuminati, a brain trust of sorts in the comic books meant to help respond to these bigger, otherworldly threats, and shape superhuman existence. Some of the members of the comics include Iron Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Professor X (though the latter, of course, won’t work in the current MCU). With this increasing of stakes, can we expect to see the Illuminati begin to form in the coming films, especially with Doctor Strange now in the picture?
At a recent press conference, this very question was asked to actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who wisely passed the question on to the Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, who responded:
“Well, what’s fun about the Illuminati is that there are certain characters interacting with other certain characters, so I don’t know about that particular storyline, but certainly some of those characters you will see on screen in the next Avengers.â€
Not really sure how I feel about that first part of the quote. Of course other characters interact with other certain characters, but the real takeaway here is his mention of the next Avengers film. I hope Feige isn’t merely stating that these characters that will eventually form the Illuminati will be in the film, and that we’ll actually see this organization take root in it, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Given that the big bad of Infinity War is set to be Thanos, the forming of an organization like the Illuminati wouldn’t be a bad thing. If nothing else, it can be formed at the tail end of the film, ready to take on the incoming struggle set to hit in Avengers 4.
