Avengers: Infinity War – It Turns Out Marvel Did Ask Hugo Weaving To Reprise His Role As Red Skull

Hugo Weaving notoriously did not seem to enjoy his time working on Captain America: The First Avenger. I don’t know if it was the working conditions, I don’t know if it was the story, or just the idea of playing something as lowly as a comic book character, but word has since gone around that he didn’t care much portraying the Red Skull.

So famous was his disdain for it, fans constantly wondered whether or not it was he who was responsible for the character not showing up. Well, we all got a little surprise earlier this year when Red Skull popped up in Avengers: Infinity War as the guardian for the Soul Stone. I remember squinting while in theater, unsure whether or not that was actually him or someone else.

As it turned out, this new take on the character was portrayed by Ross Marquand…but where was Weaving in all this? Had Marvel Studios simply skipped on asking him? Well, at a recent Q&A following an Avengers: Infinity War screening, it was revealed by directors Anthony and Joe Russo that they had actually asked Hugo Weaving to return as Red Skull.

While they didn’t embellish on the details, it’s very clear the answer was no, otherwise, he would have been in the damn movie. Also as a side note, according to the tweet from /Film regarding the event, the Soul Stone was the last stone the writers came up with for the story.

What do you think about Weaving turning down the film? Would it have been better if he returned, or is it a good thing the role went to someone who likely appreciated it more? Let us know your thoughts down below!
