Not only do these shorts test out new methods of storytelling and animation, but they also help develop talent internally, and should an animator show particular promise as a director of a short, it stands to reason they could also do pretty well in a feature-length film. Such is the case with Domee Shi, who recently directed “Bao,” which aired in front of Incredibles 2. According to a Shi, via an interview with Deadline, she’s hard at work developing her first animated feature.

“We’re just developing the story for it right now,” Shi told the outlet. “It’s super early on, but I’m really excited to play in this new 90-minute film format.”
This is pretty cool for studio, because out of the 20 films that have been released, only one was directed by a woman, and only another was directed by a person of color. Nothing against the studio — they’ve put out great movies — but as Coco proved, there is some richness to be gained by allowing other cultures and perspectives in as director.
