While obviously, all the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe take place in the same world, there are some franchises whose tones are more removed from the rest than others. As of right now, those franchises are Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy. Of those two, the latter is probably the most distinct, as it has maintained that style over the course of two films thus far, and is the brainchild of one writer-director in James Gunn.
Given just how distinct the Guardians characters are, I did wonder whether or not Avengers: Infinity War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely would be able to capture that essence we’ve grown to love. In the latest trailer for the film, we saw Star-Lord give a very Star-Lordian monologue to Iron Man, but were they able to maintain that feeling throughout?
It sounds like we’re likely getting a “yes” to that question? Why? Because of James Gunn’s involvement. Speaking at AwesomeCon, Avengers: Infinity War star Dave Bautista revealed that Gunn wrote some dialogue for the Guardians in the film. Unfortunately, it’s not clear how much of the dialogue he was involved with, so for all we know there are just a few key scenes that he wrote.
However — and this is pure speculation — if it were up to me, I would have McFeely and Markus write the draft, then have Gunn review the Guardians bits, with him performing color rewrites when necessary, to make sure everything is consistent and in-character. Who knows how Marvel Studios did it, though? It’s one big machine over there, and for all we know, there was little time for Gunn to come in and actually make a big difference. But it’s nice to know that, even if for a bit, that he was involved on some level in bringing those characters to life.
