Baby Driver was a film that managed to both match or exceed expectations of director Edgar Wright’s fans, and achieve relatively mainstream appeal.
The $34 million film managed to take in over $226 million worldwide, easily becoming Wright’s biggest hit to date. With numbers as strong as that, it wasn’t a question of whether or not there’d be a sequel, but when. It certainly helped that Wright expressed the desire to be involved as well.
Speaking with EW for an extensive piece that chronicled how the film came to be, Wright gave an update on the status of the sequel, saying:
“Those talks are already in the works. The deal is being hammered out as we speak. So, hopefully, I’m going to at least write a second one. I’ve definitely got lots of ideas. Whether it’s the next movie, I don’t know. I’m just working that out at the moment, actually. I have a couple of things that I’ve been developing, and also a couple of new ideas that I had, and all the nice things things that I’ve been offered since [the release of Baby Driver]. I would like to get back on the saddle very shortly, because — slightly beyond my control — but there was four years between The World’s End and Baby Driver. I don’t want it to be that long again. I would love to have a film out in the next two years.”
Given the hit the film was, it’s understandable that Wright is being given a lot of big offers. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be too off-the-wall for him only to commit to writing the sequel. Perhaps if we’re lucky, he can write it, pass it off to someone like Matthew Vaughn, and then go off and make another original film. I feel like that’d be the best case scenario for all parties.
Most of all, I love that Wright is so hungry to get back into things. Whether that be with Baby Driver 2 or something original, I don’t mind so much.
