Independent publisher BAD IDEA is once again pushing the boundaries of comic book collectibles—this time with what it claims is the world’s first comic that doubles as a functional knife.
Announced during the publisher’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, LANCER #1: Knife Edition is exactly what its name suggests: a comic book cover forged from stainless steel with a sharpened blade edge. Designed as an ultra-limited incentive variant, the collectible is intended to celebrate the debut of BAD IDEA’s upcoming action-horror series while continuing the publisher’s reputation for unconventional marketing stunts.
To demonstrate that the concept wasn’t merely decorative, BAD IDEA released a promotional video showing the stainless-steel prototype slicing cleanly through a steak, highlighting that the knife-shaped cover is more than just an eye-catching display piece.
While certainly one of the most unusual comic variants ever announced, the Knife Edition fits comfortably within BAD IDEA’s history of creating collectible editions that blur the line between comics and novelty items. The publisher has built its brand around limited releases, retailer-exclusive promotions, and elaborate gimmicks designed to generate buzz among collectors.
The centerpiece of the promotion, however, remains LANCER #1, a new creator-owned series written by New York Times bestselling author Mike Costa with artwork by newcomer Jake Baker and colors by Eisner Award winner Lee Loughridge.
Set in a near-future world where economic desperation has transformed side hustles into life-or-death pursuits, LANCERpromises a gritty blend of action and horror grounded in a premise that feels unsettlingly plausible. BAD IDEA describes the series as a high-octane thriller exploring survival in a society pushed to its breaking point.
Costa is already well known to comic readers through his work across multiple major publishers, while also contributing to Netflix’s Lucifer. The series may also serve as a breakout moment for artist Jake Baker, whom BAD IDEA is positioning as one of comics’ rising talents. The publisher compares Baker’s dynamic storytelling to acclaimed creators Daniel Warren Johnson, Tradd Moore, and Paul Pope, suggesting readers should expect energetic action sequences and striking visual design.
Alongside the announcement, BAD IDEA also released the first fully lettered preview pages from the debut issue, offering readers an early glimpse of the series ahead of its release.
For collectors, the Knife Edition is expected to be exceptionally difficult to obtain. The variant will be offered as a 1:250 retailer incentive, meaning comic shops must order 250 standard copies of LANCER #1 to qualify for a single Knife Edition. That level of scarcity is likely to make the collectible one of the publisher’s most sought-after incentive variants.
Whether readers view the Knife Edition as an ingenious marketing gimmick or an over-the-top collector’s item, it unquestionably succeeds in making LANCER one of the most talked-about comic launches of the year. In an industry filled with foil covers, holograms, and premium editions, BAD IDEA has once again found a way to surprise collectors by creating something few would have imagined: a comic book you could actually use to cut dinner.
