Bandersnatch Was Just The Beginning: Expect More Interactive Content From Netflix

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was the novelty of the end of 2018 and start of 2019. While there seemed to be decidedly mixed results in terms of the quality of the show presented, there is no denying that it brought the idea of interactive “movies” to the mainstream. People were definitely talking about the many different endings, branches of the story, and overall experience in a different way than film is usually discussed, which is exciting.

But did Black Mirror: Bandersnatch actually do well enough for Netflix to continue on this experiment? In a webcast on Thursday, Greg Peters, Netflix’s chief product officer seemed to imply that it at least did well enough for them to start digging deeper into shows like this.

“You should anticipate we’ll do more of those [interactive shows] as we start to explore that format,” he said.

Bandersnatch “has got storytellers salivating about the possibilities,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said.”We’ve got a hunch that [the interactive format of Bandersnatch] works across all kinds of storytelling, and some of the greatest storytellers in the world are excited to dig into it.”

And it also sounds like Netflix may be able to take advantage of some of that excitement in a different way. During the process of making Bandersnatch, they developed a system called Branch Manager, which helps make these kinds of shows more manageable. Not only do they plan to use this to produce future content like this, but they could potentially even have it as a paid service for content creators, which could serve as another stream of income for them.

So, whether or not you actually enjoyed what Black Mirror: Bandersnatch had to offer, it’s something that won’t go away in the immediate future, so perhaps there will be room for them to iterate it in a way that could convince even the biggest haters of its value.
