Ben Affleck On Netflix: ‘You Get The Sense You’re Defining Where The Future Of Cinema And Distribution Is Going’

Streaming vs. theaters. Forget Marvel and DC or Mac and PC, this is the war for the generation — a war that will determine the future of the medium. Spoiler alert: streaming will likely win in terms of being the mainstream distribution method of choice as soon as the dust settles, but that hasn’t stopped some of the big dogs over in Hollywood from resisting. More recently, Steven Spielberg made comments in favor of creating more stringent rules to make it tougher for streaming platforms to qualify for Oscars.

Though while there does seem to be some real pushback from some folks in the business, there are plenty others on board with what Netflix and other streaming service have to offer. I mean, where is Martin Scorsese’s next film headed? That’s right. Netflix. Another big movie that’s headed to the platform is the star-studded thriller Triple Frontier, starring Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac. Speaking with the Associated Press, Affleck shared how exciting it is being involved with Netflix.

“It’s very exciting, because you get the sense you’re defining where the future of cinema and distribution is going.

“Already people are watching movies on more and more platforms than they ever have, and you get the sense that you’re part of sort of this merging transition — I’m not exactly sure how it’s going to look, there’s some controversy, people have different opinions, but it’s definitely also fun to be part of what Netflix is doing, because they’re heavily investing in telling stories, they want to push a lot of stuff out there. And there’s a thrill and a rush, an excitement to that.”

In some ways, this really shouldn’t surprise me. I mean, the dude wouldn’t sign on for a film from them if he didn’t at least find the prospect of working with them intriguing. But I know in terms of format, Affleck is very much a film over digital guy, and a few years back during the latest season of Project Greenlight, I remember him talking about how movies like Citizen Kane were shot on film, so there’s no reason for him to be shooting digitally.

It’s kind of a silly mindset, in my opinion, but it’s one that I figured would carry over to distribution. I could almost imagine him saying something like “Citizen Kane was released in theaters and not digitally” as an excuse for everything to continue to stay in theaters. Looks like I was wrong with that assumption!
