Ben Mendelsohn Says Spider-Man Leaving The MCU Would Have Been A Disaster

What If...? will feature Spider-Man

A month or so ago, we were all in panic stations thinking that Spider-Man was no more in the MCU. I’m sure I don’t have to go back over the out/in drama of Spider-Man that happened recently. But I think from most fans, there was a collective sigh of relief when it was announced that Spider-Man would indeed have a third MCU movie, and that he will also appear in another unannounced team-up movie as well.

Now actor Ben Mendelsohn (who I just want to say is one of my favorite actors in the business right now), has talked about what a disaster it would have been if Spider-Man had left the MCU. He recently spoke with Metro in the UK and, well, be warned his language is somewhat full-on here.

‘I think what happens in these things is, most of the time, cooler heads prevail. Sometimes we end up in a situation which feels like it’s going to be the lead up to World War I. But s*** man. You can’t lose Spider-Man from the Marvel universe. He’s one of their absolute motherf***ing pornstars. Boy, I could name 30 that you could quite comfortably lose before you start thinking about losing Spider-Man. ‘In fact, I cannot think of a single character who’s more important to Marvel than Spider-Man. You’ve got Hulk, you’ve got Thor…none of them are as important as Spider-Man. None of them.’

I get what Mendelsohn is saying, and prior to the success of the MCU, I would have agreed. However, the MCU was pulling up trees at the box office before Spider-Man arrived. Of course, now that Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are out the MCU, perhaps it is even more important for the MCU to retain the services of Spider-Man, especially as it feels like Peter Parker is becoming the spiritual success of Tony Stark.

The truth is, the MCU is better for having Peter Parker in it, and Spider-Man works better in the MCU, for this fan at least. Spider-Man: Far From Home was far, and away my favorite Spidey movie to date, so not only am I excited to see the third Spider-Man MCU movie, I am greedy, I want more, and I know I shouldn’t.

What do you think of Mendelsohn’s comments, do you agree or disagree with what he says about Spider-Man? Leave them below if you got them.
