For Benedict Samuel, it’s a mad, mad world.
In an interview for Hulu’s Into the Dark, Samuel addressed the fan base and love garnered from the now-canceled Fox’s Gotham. Samuel played the unpredictable, crazy, Jervis Tetch, also known as the Mad Hatter for three seasons.
Jervis Tetch is a psychopathic, sadistic criminal who can manipulate people’s minds through his soft-spoken words. The character first introduced in a series of “Mad City” episodes in season three of Gotham. He played a lesser role in the next few storylines and seasons but was a significant factor in the fate of the city.
Although Fox’s Gotham was not renewed, his portrayal of Mad Hatter is one of the most memorable and fearsome of the character.
“In my opinion, what was great about Gotham is that it did have such a big fan base. It meant a lot to many people,” he said of the show.
As for Jervis Tetch, he enjoyed the simplicities of playing a villain.
“The most enjoyable thing about the Mad Hatter was his insatiable desire to end everything for Ben McKenzie’s character, James Gordon,” he explained. “That’s always fun to play someone, who’s just got a one-track [mind]—like I’m going to end everything. It’s such a heightened world with the ability to do things differently, and it’s fun as well.”
Viewers can still catch episodes of all five seasons of Gotham on Hulu and Netflix.
As for Samuel, he stars in Hulu’s Into the Dark episode called “My Valentine.” He plays a manager, who is quite manipulative and abusive to his ex-girlfriend singer. The show is episode is now available on Hulu today by visiting the site here.
