While Better Call Saul had some serious shoes to fill in the wake of Breaking Bad‘s success, I think it managed to fill them pretty well. no, it isn’t exactly the same brand of thriller that Breaking Bad was, but it managed to be a more meditative and thoughtful one that somehow turned that caricature that was Saul Goodman and turn him into one of the most relatable and tragic characters on television.
Audiences have been following the man’s exploits for four seasons now, and while there has been some good progress into the canon we already know from its parent show, there is still a lot of story to tell. But when can we expect to see the next season hit? Given that the previous season aired starting last August, this coming August seems like a given, right? As it turns out…no, as was revealed to Vulture by Sarah Barnett, president of the entertainment networks group at AMC Networks.
“We said on our most recent earnings call that the series would come back for season five next year…It’s driven by talent needs, which we would not override if it would result in a worse show.”
So, on the plus side, like other networks like Netflix, AMC doesn’t appear to be solely driven by putting out widget on a consistent basis. Series like Better Call Saul are wonderful gems that have a high bar of quality to be met, so it’s good to know they realize that and are willing to accommodate the filmmakers’ story needs.
On the downside, it means we won’t be getting Better Call Saul this year, which is a shame. Though absence makes the heart grow fonder, and I’m sure we’ll be plenty ready whenever they get around to releasing it next year. Are you happy to AMC isn’t forcing it? Let us know down below!
