Big Disney delays to movies have been announced today. Not only Indy 5 slips into 2023, but the entire MCU slate moves also. There is no word on what the cause for delays are and this does not appear to be connected to the recent IATSE strike which was averted. The Indiana Jones 5 delay, I’d guess has a lot to do with Harrison Ford’s injury, there was a some huge down time in that shoot recently. As for the Marvel slate though, who knows?
Indiana Jones 5 now moves from from July 29, 2022 to June 30, 2023. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has moved from March 25, 2022 to may 6, 2022. Thor: Love and Thunder shifts from May 6, 2022, to July 8. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has moved from July 29, 2022 to November 11. And that covers 2022 for the MCU in movie theatres.
The Marvels moves from this year to February 17, 2023. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has also moved, from February 17, 2023, we’ll now see it on July 28, 2023. Perhaps most worrying is that two movies have been pulled from the calendar altogether. These were both untitled movies set for the July 28, and October 6 slots. However a third untitled Marvel movie remains and has been moved to November 3, 2023.
So far nothing in the press release points to any delays in Disney+ shows. So one wonders if this is simply Disney reacting to Shang-Chi‘s performance badly? There’s no doubt that movie did ok, but post-pandemic ok, not pre-pandemic numbers. It’s therefore most likely in my eyes that these movies have all just shifted to allow some more time. Currently there are no changes to either Eternals or Spider-Man: No Way Home both due in November and December respectively.
Delays always suck, however at least these are not too crazy. The worst delay of all is Indiana Jones 5 and at least we have a more valid reason for that one.
Let us know what you think of these big Disney delays, as Indy 5 and the entire MCU slate moves to new dates? Thoughts below as always.
