It’s been a solid while since we’ve heard an update in regards to Bill and Ted Face the Music, the third and probably final film in the Bill and Ted franchise, which started many decades ago when Keanu Reeves was a young lad with a bright future ahead of him. So what’s the current status of this long-in-development threequel?
Executive Producer Steven Soderbergh was at a recent Q&A at this year’s Slamdance film festival, and when asked about it, he said the film will be “hilarious.” That’s all well and good, but around how long will we have to wait around until we can judge for ourselves? Soderbergh went on to say that it could see a release this Christmas. “That’d be a good Christmas present.”
Admittedly this is far from a full-on confirmation from the man (it almost sounds like a hopeful claim rather than one embedded in full confidence), but it’s still something, right? Well, when last we heard, the film was set to shoot this month starting a couple weeks back. While I haven’t heard any updates on its progress, assuming it’s on schedule, a December release doesn’t seem too crazy. Then again, following that production date, it seemed like the film was having certain issues, so I guess this can be seen as a confirmation that it’s actually happening.
Here’s how Bill and Ted Face the Music is being described:
“When we last picked up with the most audacious dudes they were time-traveling teenagers trying to pass history class and win the battle of the bands. Once prophesized to save the universe with their rock and roll, according to the production the new movie will see the two best friends as middle-aged men with family responsibilities who have yet to fulfill their destiny. They’ve written thousands of tunes, but they have yet to write a good one, much less the greatest song ever written. With the fabric of time and space tearing around them, a visitor from the future warns the duo that only their music can save life as we know it. Out of luck and inspiration, Bill and Ted set out on another time travel adventure — with the help of their daughters, a new crop of historical figures, and some sympathetic music legends — to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe as we know it.”
