Billy Porter Slams Vogue Over Harry Styles Cover

Harry Styles was the first man to be on the cover of Vogue solo in a dress. He wore a poofy blue dress with lace trim and tuxedo jacket for the cover. I hated it. To me, it wasn’t a good outfit. I especially hated the exposed hoop skirt look he wore for the shoot as well. Why were people obsessed with the Harry Styles Vogue photoshoot? There are better dressed men out there. Actor and singer, Billy Porter, is one of them and he helped create this space for men in fashion. Porter has a few words he’d like to say about all this.

Fashion Icon Tells It Like It Is

Billy Porter made a statement to Vogue:

I changed the whole game. I. Personally. Changed. The. Whole. Game. And that is not ego, that is just fact. I was the first one doing it and now everybody is doing it. I feel like the fashion industry has accepted me because they have to. I’m not necessarily convinced and here is why. I created the conversation [about non-binary fashion] and yet Vogue still put Harry Styles, a straight white man, in a dress on their cover for the first time.

He is the one you’re going to try and use to represent this new conversation? He doesn’t care, he’s just doing it because it’s the thing to do. This is politics for me. This is my life. I had to fight my entire life to get to the place where I could wear a dress to the Oscars and not be gunned now. All he has to do is be white and straight.

Ouch! I don’t think it’s fair to say that Harry Styles doesn’t care, but Porter makes an excellent point. Also, I think Vogue missed a great opportunity to have the first man in a dress solo on the cover of their magazine be a fashion pioneer. And, of course, men in dresses isn’t new. It’s just newer in the modern age for western culture and men like Billy Porter paved the way for that safe space. Many cultures in history around the world have worn them and some cultures still do. I don’t understand why so many were giddy when Styles did this photoshoot. The comments section is filled with fan-service cringe. I’ve seen many of Porter’s outfits. He’s got great taste and I think Styles needs to go back to the drawing board for some of his. They’re not all bad, but many need a lot of work.

What are your thoughts on Billy Porter calling out Vogue over Harry Styles’ cover? Let me know in the comments.
