Birds Of Prey: Harley Quinn’s Costume Will Be Less ‘Male Gaze-y’ Says Margot Robbie

Harley Quinn is an interesting character. She’s one that bounces comfortably between comedic fun character to over-sexualized male fantasy, and often times in the same comics, cartoons, or films she’s starring in. It’s kind of a natural consequence of originating in a property largely geared towards males. This bled over into the Suicide Squad film, where she sported short shorts and a skin-tight shirt, along with her trademark bat.

But with Harley Quinn’s next feature, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), things are decidedly quite different. Yes, we’re sure she’ll be sporting some super Harley-esque outfits, but when visiting star Margot Robbie in her trailer while filming, Vogue couldn’t help but note a difference.

This time around, she was wearing a sequined blazer, a sports bra, and orange track shorts, in an outfit that writer of the piece contrasted with Robbie’s previous outfit as “more Sporty Spice than male fantasy.”

In response, the film’s costume designer, Erin Benach, said, “That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer.”

“Yeah, it’s definitely male gaze-y,” Robbie added.

It is always interesting to see how differently the different sexes tend to handle different aspects of the filmmaking process. To see this in practice, you need only look at the difference in how Wonder Woman shots are handled in the Wonder Woman film compared to Justice League, the latter of which had a few extra lingering upskirt shots of the character.

I’m curious to see how these differences will be handled with Cathy Yan at the helm.
