Birds Of Prey Lands An R Rating

After years of trying to ape Marvel around every corner, it looks like Warner Bros. and DC are actually learning to lean into the strengths of their own characters. We saw this in recent years with films like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam!, and more recently, Joker, the latter of which received a hard R rating. It marked the latest in a trend of (gasp) actually allowing the rating to reflect the nature of the character.

So, what about Harley Quinn? DC Universe has allowed her to be just as foul-mouthed and violent as one would expect, but would Warner Bros. allow the same treatment for the big-screen treatment of the character in Birds of Prey?

According to IMDb, yes. The site states that the film has been rated R for “strong violence and language throughout, and some sexual and drug material.” While this may not be the first R-rated DC film to hit, it is definitely the first R-rated DC Extended Universe film.

So, what does this mean? To me, it means that The Suicide Squad from James Gunn may also likely be rated R. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean DC will be going all R-rated, but it means they likely won’t be shying away from it when it fits.
