Well, this is a bit unexpected. DC Films and Warner Bros. have a good amount of stuff on their plates. Between Nightwing, The Batman, Batgirl, Green Lantern Corps, and countless others, there was no easy way of guessing which of their films they would decide to greenlight next. With the success of Wonder Woman and the disappointment of Justice League still fresh, it seemed very clear that whatever was on their slate before was now all up in the air.
On Monday, we reported on the news that Christina Hodson was up to write the next draft of Batgirl for the studio, but what we didn’t share was the other, potentially more interesting part of the story. Hodson didn’t just write the script for the Bumblebee flick, but she also wrote the script for the Birds of Prey movie, which was set to bring back Suicide Squad‘s Harley Quinn.
We should take the fact that they brought her onto Batgirl as a good sign, as it shows they were very happy with the draft of the script she turned in to them. Now, TheWrap is reporting that the studio is high on the Birds of Prey script, and is currently looking for directors for the project. So, interestingly enough, the next big project that gets greenlit from the studio following Wonder Woman 2 may, in fact, be Birds of Prey.
As I said yesterday in the Batgirl piece, as of this time, Hodson’s writing efforts have largely been duds (even if she has become a hot commodity in Hollywood), but I’m hoping that Birds of Prey showed a significant step up, and was something DC fans can get on board with. Birds of Prey would be another interesting property for them to tackle, though, in a world where just throwing the three biggest names in comic books together in a movie didn’t quite work, it’s arguably not the most natural step for them to take.
