In case you haven’t noticed by now, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) doesn’t look like it’s going to be your average film. In addition to the Derelicte fashion Harley Quinn has going on in the film, there was that theater-only teaser that saw her hammering a Pennywise balloon, and there, of course, are those rumors surrounding the now-infamous d**k pic MacGuffin of the story.
But how did this whole thing get started? It’s clear at this point that the film is “Birds of Prey” in name only, and will be an experience wholly unique to the big screen, and that’s ultimately backed up by screenwriter Christina Hodson. Here’s what she told Total Film.
“Margot knew she wanted to tell a ‘Harley Quinn plus girls’ story. That was kind of where she began with it. She knew she wanted a girl gang. She wanted Harley to have friends.”
Given that Harley Quinn has spent a decent chunk of her life under the thumb of the oppressive Joker, it makes sense that they’d want to have a movie where she’d come into her own and create her own group of friends. Plus, while Suicide Squad had her running around with others, I get the impression these women will make a bigger impact.
“[Star and producer Margot Robbie] had naturally gravitated towards the Birds of Prey,” Hodson continued. “She’s a comic-book fan. Obviously, you know, it’s not a traditional team-up. So then it was about finding fun, inventive ways of doing that. Warners were very supportive in terms of letting me go off-leash.”
I’m probably in the minority here, but I’m at the stage where I’m just happy to see something unique getting done in the genre. I’m ready to see something fun, goofy, stupid, and ridiculous, and while reports of an overhaul in reshoots have been thrown about, I’m hopeful they keep the d**k pic aspect of the story.
But I’m a weirdo.
