Black Adam is a character audiences have been waiting to see in live-action for years. Dwayne Johnson has been signed on to bring him to life for a hell of a long time. Seriously, he’s been set to play this character longer than many DCEU characters. This includes those who were cast after him and have shown up in multiple movies. Such is the case when you have a film that is based solely around its star, which is an old-school method that Johnson and his team seem to embrace.
And yet, in spite of his star power, that Black Adam movie has yet to grace the big screen. It’s been in the works and is set for a December 2021 release date. However, it has yet to get in front of cameras. In fact, its schedule has largely remained a mystery until now. Speaking with Collider, producer Hiram Garcia gave an update on when they hope to move things along.
“COVID threw a curveball in a big way and readjusted everyone’s schedule,” Garcia said. “But I think the easiest way to look at it is it simply pushed the entire industry’s schedule a few months… We’re planning to pick back up with Black Adam some time first quarter next year and hoping to lock that all down soon.”
In the grand scheme of things, this is nothing. The entire film industry has seen releases pushed back, so it only makes sense that this one would follow suit. But this likely pains a lot of fans who were looking forward to seeing the Justice Society of America being realized on the big screen. Luckily, it sounds like Garcia is just as thrilled.

“We are so excited to introduce the Justice Society, especially Hawkman who’s such a beloved character and one of those heroes who’s always meant so much to the DC universe,” said Garcia. “Having them play in the same sandbox as Black Adam is going to be fantastic, and for the already established fans of these characters I think they are going to be really excited to see what elements from classic storylines we take inspiration from as we bring these characters together.
“When you take a powerhouse like Black Adam and inject him into this DC cinematic universe you want to make sure you are putting characters around him that can really up the stakes,” Garcia continued. “As DJ likes to say the hierarchy of power in the DC universe really is going to change so Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone will have their hands full no matter how we choose to have them interact with Black Adam.”
Personally, I’m more interested to see what happens to the DCEU as a whole. As Johnson teased during the DC FanDome event, Black Adam will fundamentally alter the power structure within the films. In essence, everything has been so Justice League-focused. This will be the first hero who could go head-to-head with Superman.
