Black Lightning To End With Season 4 On The CW

Black Lightning

Black Lightning has been one of my favorite superhero television series to date on The CW. Cress Williams has played a fantastic Jefferson Pierce. A high school principal that is forced to once again become his vigilante persona after years of retirement. It has been a fantastic show that really promotes the idea of coming together as a community, as well as the importance of educating and mentoring the youth. What has allowed it to shine has been the separation between this series and the rest of the Arrowverse. There is no Flash, Supergirl, or Arrow to come in and save the day if things get rough. Just their local community and local heroes to save the day!

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. It has been reported today that Black Lightning will be ending its run on The CW after its fourth season. This announcement comes a little over a week since The CW ordered the backdoor pilot for a potential Black Lightning spinoff, Painkiller.

Series developer and executive producer Salim Akil gave a statement about the announcement via Variety. “When we first started the ‘Black Lighting’ journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black Women would be a unique addition to the superhero genre. The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined, Black People Want To See Themselves in all their complexities.”

“Thank you to the phenomenal cast, writers, and crew without whom none of this would’ve been possible,” Akil continued. “I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve been able to do and the moments we’ve been able to create in bringing DC’s first African-American family of superheroes to life for the culture. I’m very grateful to Peter Roth, Warner Bros. TV, Mark Pedowitz, The CW Network, and Greg Berlanti for their partnership and support of my vision at every step of this journey. While Season Four may be the end of one journey, I’m extremely excited to usher in a new chapter and continued collaboration with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller.”

The cast for Black Lightning also includes Christine Adams, China Anne McClain, Nafessa Williams, James Remar, Marvin Jones III, Jordan Calloway, and Damon Gupton. To me, Jones’s Tobias Whale has been one of the best antagonists in the Arrowverse. I would love to see him go up against other DC superheroes that will probably underestimate him.

Going forward if Painkiller get’s picked up, it will be interesting to see if some of the characters like China Anne McClain’s Lightning will show up in the series. So that means that we are losing this series as well as Supergirl after this season. Akil has done a great job with this series, it’s a shame that it will end. But it’s better to end on a high note than forcing it to go on and end up falling flat.
