Surprise, surprise. It looks like Black Panther has hit another crazy milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to a new report from Variety, the superhero standalone film is now the third highest grossing Marvel film domestically.
As of this past Monday, the film has taken in over 411 million in North America alone. this means it has shot past Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War, which made $409 million and $408 million, respectively. again, this is a pretty big deal. Iron Man 3 did so well because it was the third film in an established franchise. Captain America: Civil War was also the third in an established franchise, but it had the added benefit of having a dozen superheroes thrown in the mix for good measure.
However, with Black Panther, we literally have a stand-alone superhero movie with no previous installment. Sure, he was introduced in another film, but he wasn’t the lead in any movie before that, so this milestone is quite the achievement. But the film isn’t going to stop there. Given its momentum, it’s very likely to pass Avengers: Age of Ultron not only domestically, but worldwide as well.
Clearly, between the amazing reviews, the A+ CinemaScore, and all around social importance, Black Panther is set to be perhaps one of the biggest feathers and Marvel Studios cap.
