Marvel Studio’s Black Panther had a great soundtrack when the film was first released in theaters back in 2018. Kendrick Lamar produced original songs that were released in February of that year in an album titled, Black Panther: The Album by Interscope Records. It made it to the top position on the Billboard 200 and the song “Kings Dead” featuring Lamar, Jay Rock Future and James Blake won a Grammy. Now two years later that album seems to have a problem.

One of the songs in that album by Lamar and The Weeknd titled, “Pray for Me” is the target of a lawsuit for copyright infringement by a Brooklyn based band named Yeasayer according to The Wrap. This band, which broke up last year, is claiming that they stole vocals from one of their songs and put them into “Pray for Me”. That the duo stole “a distinctive choral performance … comprised of male voices singing in their highest registers, with animated, pulsing vibrato, and developed via distinctive audio post-processing”, from a song called “Sunrise”.

Their lawsuit was filed on Monday in a federal court in New York. They are accusing the duo and producers of “Pray for Me” of extracting their vocal performance and then modifying so that they could then insert it into their song. They say that even though it’s been modified, their vocals are “immediately recognizable” as theirs and was used eight times during the song. Along with copyright infringement, they are also seeking unspecified damages. Also they are seeking an injunction to stop sales and licensing of the song.

Here are both songs so that you can form your own opinion. The vocals in question can be heard in the chorus on “Pray for Me” and in the beginning of the song “Sunrise”. Check it out!

Although I agree that the sounds are close, I am not sure that it win a lawsuit against Lamar and The Weeeknd. Also the timing seems interesting as this is something that probably needed to have been brought up earlier, why now? For now both Lamar and The Weeknd have not commented on the matter. What do you think? Do they have a case? Let us know in the comment section below!
