Black Panther To Reign Again For Third Weekend In A Row

In news that surprises no one, it looks like Black Panther will be taking the crown at the box office once again. What is surprising is how much it may very well be making.

According to a report from Variety, Marvel Studios’ latest opus is set to have an astonishing $75M week in North America. To put things into, that’s only $10M less than Doctor Strange made in its opening weekend, and is only around a 33 percent drop from its second weekend. Again, comparing that to Doctor Strange — another first standalone film — which dropped closer to 60 percent from its second weekend to its third.

But this potential figure has impact beyond most other standard Marvel movies. It has the potential to have the second highest grossing third week of all time, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ $90.2M. That’s right, there’s the potential for it to have even greater staying power than 2012’s The Avengers, which made $55.6M in its third weekend.

It certainly helps that there’s not a lot of real competition. This weekend will see two R-rated enterprises hit with Jennifer Lawrence’s spy film Red Sparrow and Bruce Willis’ violent revenge flick, Death Wish. The films are set to make $15 to $19M, and $14 to $16M, respectively.

While this performance will do well for the $30M-budgeted Death Wish, such a box office opening won’t do too well for Red Sparrow, which carries a $69M budget.
