Blair Witch Project Director On A Potential Direction For A New Film

It’s crazy to think that a little horror movie called The Blair Witch Project had such an impact — and it wasn’t just in the horror genre, but in filmmaking in general. It may not be the first found footage film, but it’s certainly the one that got the snowball rolling down that proverbial hill. Nowadays, when you see a found footage film, it’s pretty common for it to be compared to The Blair Witch Project.

Though while its legacy has lived on, the franchise itself hasn’t exactly exploded as one would expect. All in all, only three films have been made — which is not very many for a horror movie. But is it dead? Are there no more ideas for this one? Speaking with ComicBook.com, the original film’s director Eduardo Sanchez gave his thoughts on a way to proceed with the franchise.

“I still think that there is a way to bring back a little bit of the mystery of Blair Witch, which is the newness of it,” Sanchez said. “I’m not sure if going on the sequel route is the way to do it. For me, it would have to be a uniquely singular film. It’d have to be a film that somehow had, not found footage again, of course, but something that does something that doesn’t look like a normal film, that doesn’t have the same subject matter as a normal film.”

He added, “I think that the Blair Witch film property should have gone backwards. We should have gone back in time and done period pieces of the mythology, and those elements. But again, bringing a unique vision, whether it’s a new filmmaker or a new screenwriter or somebody, but bring a unique vision to it, that sets it apart from everything else in the universe, in that world.”

It’s not too late! If he really wants to dive into the mythology, he can still totally do it. That being said, I do have to agree with his overall sentiment here. They don’t want to go found footage again, but there should be SOMETHING out there that helps set it apart. Some gimmick or hook that makes it unlike anything else out there.

Paranormal Activity really drove the found footage thing into the ground, but Blair Witch’s legacy can really go deeper and go for more experimental methods that can take the world by storm. But what will these methods be…? It’s easier said than done, that’s for sure.
