Here is the official synopsis for the movie from Twentieth Century Fox.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.

There has been a lot of buzz about this movie and that’s probably due to the everlasting love affair that the world still has with Queen’s music and Freddie in particular. Of course, we know that Mercury died from an AIDS-related illness in 1991. Being around 12/13 at the time, I can still remember the prejudice and stigma attached to AIDS and HIV at this point in time.

If anything positive came from Mercury’s untimely passing it was perhaps an acceleration of the acceptance of homosexuality as a lifestyle choice and a greater education for the masses about the exact nature of HIV and ultimately AIDS.

I do enjoy Queen’s music, always have done and I actually remember my elder sister watching that famous Live Aid performance back in 1985. Little did I know then how iconic that performance would become.

I must say that whilst I enjoy the odd musical biopic, that’s all I see this as. I can’t see this being the kind of movie I would visit a theater for. I am definitely more likely to wait for cable or streaming for the movie.
