Despite the contrary belief, Asians do desire to play basketball and seek to fulfill those dreams.
From acclaimed writer and producer Eddie Huang (Fresh of the Boat), it marked his directorial debut with Boogie. It’s a coming-of-age story of Alfred “Boogie” Chin, a basketball phenom living in Queens, New York, who dreams of playing in the NBA. While his parents pressure him to focus on earning a scholarship to an elite college, Boogie must find a way to navigate a new girlfriend, high school, on-court rivals, and the burden of expectation.
The film is the acting debut for Taylor Takahashi. He is supported by Taylour Paige, Pamelyn Chee, Mike Moh, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Alexa Mareka, Perry Yung, and Bashar “Pop Smoke” Jackson.
Focus Features released three of the character posters from the movie of Takahashi as Boogie, Paige as Eleanor, and Pop Smoke as Monk.

Potentially, this can be a good start for Eddie Huang’s directorial career in the footsteps of Spike Lee of generating urban stories. Huang has a gift for telling coming-of-age stories from the Asian perspective and masters the use of urban culture in his projects. As an Asian, it’s most definitely a film to check out that destroys the stereotypes of a typical Asian person growing up.
Boogie releases in theaters on March 5.
