Bottoms Featurette Explains Raunchy Female Fight Club and Empowerment

Rachel Sennott in Bottoms

Teen raunchy comedies are back in theaters.

It’s been a while since theaters took a gamble on so-called mid-tier budgeted teen comedies again that are not labeled as comic book or franchise movies.

Bottoms is a female teen comedy that is currently rated with a 99 percent Rotten Tomatoes score with 72 reviews (that’s extraordinarily high!) Also, some of the audience members rated it as a perfect 100 percent score.

The cast includes Rachel Sennott (Shiva Baby, Bodies Bodies Bodies), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear, What We Do in the Shadows), Havana Rose Liu (No Exit, The Sky Is Everywhere), Kaia Gerber (Babylon, American Horror Story), Nicholas Galitzine (Cinderella, Red, White & Royal Blue), with Dagmara Dominczyk (The Count of Monte Cristo, They) and Marshawn Lynch. Emma Seligman directed the film from the screenplay written by Seligman and Sennott.

Here is the official synopsis:

Bottoms, a refreshingly unique raunchy comedy, focuses on two girls, PJ and Josie, who start a fight club as a way to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. Their bizarre plan works. The fight club gains traction and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense. But PJ and Josie find themselves in over their heads and in need of a way out before their plan is exposed.

In this new era of post-pandemic theater releases, the studios relied on reliable genres of comic book films, franchise films, and horror movies to bring audiences to pack their seats. Comedies, especially raunchy comedies, are a hit or miss in the theaters.

With Bottoms already being a hit with critics and early audience goers, the film can be a sleeper hit in the fall, with major films shifting their schedules and a bunch of horror films entering the market.

Bottoms plays in select theaters today in the Los Angeles, New York, Austin, and San Francisco markets. It expands nationwide next Friday.
