Brandon Christensen knows children create imaginary friends to talk and interact with. What if these imaginary friends are real and terrifying monsters?

Christensen took a basic family common concept and introduced it into the horror movie Z. The film stars Keegan Connor Tracy (Final Destination 2), Jett Klyne (The Boy), Sean Rogerson (Grave Encounters), Sara Canning (War for the Planet of the Apes), Stephen McHattie (Watchmen), and Chandra West (White Noise). Christensen directed the film and co-wrote the script with Colin Minihan (What Keeps You Alive, Grave Encounters).

In the film, when Beth’s (Tracy) son (Klyne) brings home an imaginary friend named “Z,” she becomes concerned that he is falling too deep into a world of make-believe. He starts to display extremely destructive behavior, blaming Z for all of his actions. But after he gets kicked out of school, Beth is forced to find a solution. She medicates her son, making him unable to see his imaginary companion. But not Beth sees Z…and he wants to be her friend.

LRM Online spoke with director Brandon Christensen on Zoom about his project. We discussed the production of the horror movie, the cast, origins of the story, and how he came up with the name of the imaginary friend.

Christensen’s Z is his sophomore directorial feature film. His previous movie was Still/Born, a horror filming about a new mother who gave twins, but only of them is alive while a supernatural entity haunts them.

Z is currently streaming exclusively on AMC Network’s Shudder. Also, the film is released on VOD, Digital HD, DVD, and Blu-ray. On the Digital HD release, it includes an iTunes package that features an audio commentary with Christensen, behind-the-scenes interviews with cast and crew, never-before-seen deleted scenes and outtakes, insider’s look at the music, VFX, and the notorious “Stair Scare.”
