If you’ve picked up any of the Stormlight Archive novels, chances are you’ve seen its symbol. While it hasn’t been used extensively, it did pop up in some of the chapter headings. The image shows off a sword (presumably a Shardblade) crisscrossed by other swords. In the background is a circle that brings the whole thing together. Seems like a pretty legit logo, right? It definitely gets the whole fantasy angle across, and is pretty recognizable to those who have read the story.

However, sometimes a symbol can be awesome in many ways but still can’t accomplish the goal it’s supposed. Such is the case with that logo. According to Brandon Sanderson’s blog, Tor (his publisher) requested that they create an all-new symbol that simplifies the concept of the original. The reason is because the current symbol is so detailed that it doesn’t read well at small sizes.

As such, they went to work, drawing hundreds of attempts, they have settled on the new symbol. Take a look down below!

“We’ve built this on the skeleton of the original symbol, preserving the relationship between the sword, circle, and main focal point. Instead of extra swords, we have rays of light,” the blog read. “Instead of the complex double-eye of the Almighty, we’ve chosen the burst of light from the original Cosmere symbol.”

If you are worried this will replace the original symbol though, fret not. That isn’t the case. This isn’t going to be the symbol going forward, but will likely instead be used in situations where the multi-sword symbol wouldn’t shine. But they guarantee that the original symbol will not be replaced. It will be used in the leatherbound Way of Kings book as well as a chapter icon in future Stormlight Archive novels.
