Rhythm of War is coming along nicely!
It’s kind of hilarious that today has offered us not just one update on a big novel franchise, but two. It’s even more hilarious that the authors providing said updates are on opposite ends of the spectrum. On one hand, you have George R.R. Martin. He doesn’t outline, he releases a book every several years, and he constantly misses deadlines. On the other, you have Brandon Sanderson. He outlines, releases two books a year (usually tomes), and rarely misses deadlines.
I already reported on The Winds of Winter, so I guess it’s time to talk Rhythm of War. This novel marks the fourth entry in The Stormlight Archive series, and is set to hit this November. So, how far along is this new 1,300-page doorstop of a book? Brandon Sanderson took to social media to reveal where that book stands.

Huzzah! I've turned in Part Two of Rhythm of War, bringing the final draft to 40% complete. pic.twitter.com/JoLdIn7tJ0

As you can see, he has finished Part Two of the novel, putting him at the 40% mark of the fifth draft. Previous entries in the Stormlight Archive books have consisted of five parts, so that percentage makes a lot of sense. And, of course, we can’t forget about the interludes, the prologue, and the epilogue of the story, which also play a key role in the novel’s length.
Rhythm of War will be the fourth volume in what Sanderson anticipates to be a ten-volume series. However, this series will also be divided into two distinct parts, with volume five being the end of the first arc. As such, Rhythm of War will likely see the endgame start to come into view for this first arc, which is exciting.
