Brandon Sanderson Gives Updates On Mistborn, Stormlight Archive, And General Cosmere Adaptations

Brandon Sanderson gives us an update on all the adaptations in the works.

Brandon Sanderson is an author who has yet to have his books adapted for the screen. This is in spite of the fact that his books have sold millions and he’s become a fantasy juggernaut, things have yet to go his way in terms of adaptations. And it hasn’t been for a lack of trying. We know he’s already sold a bunch of his properties, including Mistborn and the Alcatraz series, but still…nada.

So, what’s the current state of Brandon Sanderson adaptations? The man himself released a video that updates us on the whole deal. He started with Mistborn, a property that he’s sold a few times, but to no avail. As it stands, he is working on the adaptation himself. He is starting off with a treatment, in hopes that it will attract the right Hollywood talent.

He may or may not work on the screenplay or work with a co-writer, depending on how things shake out (though he doesn’t necessarily doesn’t want to work on the screenplay). Sanderson himself hopes another more practiced screenwriter will come on board, and thinks hi work on the treatment is a good way to split the difference between his under-involvement and over-involvement.

As it stands, though, he very much sees Mistborn as a live-action film, though he isn’t completely closed off to a live-action or animated series. The reason for his film desire is that he always saw Mistborn as a film since it was inspired by his love of heist movies.

Sanderson admits his other books will be a tougher sell as movies. He does not believe The Stormlight Archive can be a film series. Given that each book is around 1,200 pages, he sees it more of a TV series, live-action or animated. He says it would need to be one of those shows that shoots a full season at a time, not unlike The Witcher or Game of Thrones.

“The rights for most of the Cosmere reside with em right now,” Sanderson said. “I haven’t sold them. Not again. The Stormlight rights reside with DMG and Dan Mintz, who have had them for a long time, and who I really like. I do have some other things happening with various other series of mine that are non-Cosmere, where we are still trying various television shows, like Legion, which we are trying to get into a television show. With Alcatraz, which we are trying as an animated television show. Different things like that. And for a long time, we’ve been trying to get Snapshot to work.”

So, there you have it. Sadly, there has been no progress on any of his projects as of late, but if there was an era where things like this can work, it’s now. Luckily, he just broke all sorts of records with this Stormlight Archive Kickstarter. I hope he and DMG are using all that as leverage as they try to get various series going.
