This morning, Lucasfilm announced that Iron Man, The Jungle Book, and The Lion King (the upcoming live-action remake), has signed with the studio to executive produce and write a new live-action Star Wars series. This new Star Wars series will stream exclusively on Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer digital platform.

Here’s what Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had to say about the announcement:

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform. Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Jon Favreau also spoke regarding this big news, saying:

“If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

Fans will likely be incredibly excited to hear about this news. For years, fans have been hoping to see a live-action series in some form or another. Given the success Marvel has had with Netflix, many hoped it would go there. However, with Disney releasing their own streaming service, this move makes a great deal of sense.
