Brec Bassinger Cast As Courtney Whitmore AKA Stargirl

With the DC Universe streaming site officially coming online in Saturday during Batman Day, DC fans can now pay $5.99-$7.99 a month for access to a catalog of films, TV shows and comic books. As part of their TV show offerings they are offering a number of exclusive series like the highly anticipated Titans series, Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing and Stargirl. Speaking of Stargirl, the news broke yesterday via Deadline about their lead character.

Brec Bassinger of Nickelodeon’s Bella & the Bulldogs will be playing the main character named Courtney Whitmore aka Stargirl. This series is comes from Warner Bros. Digital Networks and DC Entertainment. Stargirl is an intelligent, athletic and kind character.

Her character has a special place in the heart of the shows writer and executive producer Geoff Johns, who while writing for DC Comics created the character. He spoke briefly about the casting of Bassinger.

“There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl, and after searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger,” Johns said. “Brec’s warmth, strength, humor and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I’m so grateful she’s signed on for the role.”

One of the reasons that this character is so close to Johns is because he created the character in 1999 and based her off of his late sister, also named Courtney who passed away in a tragic plane crash is 1996. Her character has been featured in a few animated series as well as in the live action Smallville and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Besides Bella & the Bulldog, Bassinger has also starred in the Hulu series All Night and has had appearances in shows like The Haunted Hathaways, School of Rock and The Goldbergs.

DC Universe’s Stargirl is expected to be released sometime in 2019 exclusively on their streaming service.
