Her character has a special place in the heart of the shows writer and executive producer Geoff Johns, who while writing for DC Comics created the character. He spoke briefly about the casting of Bassinger.

“There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl, and after searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger,” Johns said. “Brec’s warmth, strength, humor and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I’m so grateful she’s signed on for the role.”

One of the reasons that this character is so close to Johns is because he created the character in 1999 and based her off of his late sister, also named Courtney who passed away in a tragic plane crash is 1996. Her character has been featured in a few animated series as well as in the live action Smallville and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Besides Bella & the Bulldog, Bassinger has also starred in the Hulu series All Night and has had appearances in shows like The Haunted Hathaways, School of Rock and The Goldbergs.
