One of the strangest and lovable comedies out of the Sundance Film Festival this year has to be Brian and Charles.
Expanded from the short film of the same title, the fascinating story follows a lonely inventor who built his own best friend as a robot, but the machine develops very childlike instincts.
Here is the description of the film from Sundance:
An endearing outlier, Brian lives alone in a Welsh valley, inventing oddball contraptions that seldom work. After finding a discarded mannequin head, Brian gets an idea. Three days, the washing machine, and sundry spare parts later, he’s invented Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English from a dictionary and proves to be a charming, cheeky companion. Before long, however, Charles also develops autonomy. Intrigued by the wider world—or whatever lies beyond the cottage where Brian has hidden him away—Charles craves adventure.
The film stars David Earl as Brian with Chris Hayward as Charles the robot. Jim Archer directed the movie that was co-written with Earl.
