Calista Flockhart Returns To Season Finale Of Supergirl

Deadline is reporting that Calista Flockhart is set to make her return to Supergirl. Calista starred in Season 1 of the show as Cat Grant, head of Catco Worldwide Media and boss of our hero, Kara Danvers. When filming went from Los Angeles to Vancouver for Season 2 when the show switched networks from CBS to The CW, Cat Grant went from a series regular to leaving the show after the second episode of the season.

While not my favorite DC television show, Supergirl has been good, consistent, yet cheesy fun. For me, the character of Cat Grant has consistently been the one character that pulled me out of the world the other actors were trying to create. Cat Grant just seems fake, even for Supergirl. Calista is playing a caricature, a cliche. Not a character.

"Say what?"

“Say what?”

When she first appeared on screen, you got the impression that you weren’t going to like her. I could have accepted that, having a boss that would make Kara continually struggle between her day job at Catco as well as her work in protecting National City as Supergirl. Yet pretty quickly in Season 1 the producers tried to gain sympathy for the character, even going so far as to make Cat Grant the Lois Lane of this world by being ignorant to the fact that her assistant Kara is in fact Supergirl.

"Hey, you think? No, couldn't be."

“Hey, you think? No, couldn’t be.”

You get the impression that some actors don’t want to take risks. They view themselves as a business commodity, banking on the fact that the public sees them in one particular light. I think of Tom Cruise who for years has played similar characters in his movies, the rogue hero battling evil forces that want to destroy him. Yet the few times he’s broken from that mold, such as the role of Lestat in Neil Jordan’s Interview With The Vampire, based on Anne Rice’s book, he gave an amazing performance. You understand why Tom Cruise is a great actor when he plays against type.

Calista Flockhart appears to want to play a likablecharacter similar to the role she originated in the 90’s, Ally McBeal. With how she’s portrayed Cat Grant to date, I find myself more annoyed than anything else. I’m sure Greg Berlanti and company have something big in store, such as the news we at LRM reported on Tuesday that Superman will also be returning for the season finale. When it comes to Cat Grant, I find myself shrugging in apathy.

So what do you think? Are you excited to see Cat Grant return to Supergirl? Do you think Calista Flockhart has done a good job with that role? What would you like to see from her character in the final two episodes of the season? Sound of in the comments section below.
