Speaking at a recent convention Stargate SG-1 star Richard Dean Anderson reveals plot details of the now scrapped Stargate reboot. RDA was for many years the lead star of SG-1 as Colonel Jack O’Neil as the commanding officer of the SG-1 team. In later seasons Anderson took a back seat and an on screen promotion to General.
It was not that long ago now we heard that the in development reboot series at Amazon had been cancelled. Amazon say they are still keen to expand the franchise, but how and where, who knows?
Speaking at Rose City Comic Con moderated by ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan, Anderson said,
“I’ve stayed out of touch with many things in my life, but the politics going on over the reboot, they’re calling it – first of all, it technically didn’t seem like a reboot more than it was using Michael Shanks’ character, Daniel, well again, as the conduit that would take us from our show, from our universe to the next generation of it. Something has gone awry in the negotiations, or the development, or who’s going to run it, who’s going to control it, etc. etc. There’s so many things that take place behind my scene anyway. I can guess what has been happening, but I think it’s been forestalled because of all of those things I just referenced a second ago.”
Anderson says when speaking with Shanks it appears like the reboot is officially dead.
“I honestly don’t know what’s happening to it or what’s going to happen with it. It feels, to talk to Michael about it, that it’s kind of a dead issue. I don’t know that for sure. Please don’t spread the word. But there is a campaign going on. Save Stargate. That’s the name of the campaign that’s going on to not let it die. In other words, to save it. That’s as clear as I can be, which is such a sad commentary.”

I’d have checked out this show for sure. Yet, at the same time I can’t say this premise excites me that much. Stargate has travelled to parallel universes before, but setting a whole series there and maybe effectively ‘starting again’ may not have ticked the boxes for me.
Yet, Amazon say they felt the series would only appeal to die hard fans. For me, as a fan, what would appeal to me is a new show set in the same timeline looking at what happened next. Perhaps a world now unlike our own that has the Stargate Program publicly revealed? That I could see Amazon being worried about attracting new fans, though it’s about the set up.
But I can’t judge a series that was never made based on one sentence from an actor who hear second hand from an old work colleague. What will happen to Stargate? My guess is either nothing at all, or a complete reboot with no references to what came before.
Then that rebooted series will fail and nothing will happen for years again. As for this reboot? I’ve seen bigger campaigns to bring shows back fail, so I don’t see it ever coming back now.
