James Cameron confirms that Avatar 4 & 5 will be made after the success of The Way of Water at the box office. Cameron had always stated that although Avatar 2 & 3 were shot simultaneously, the status of the final two movies he’s written would depend on how profitable these sequels were.

Avatar: The Way of Water is already the 7th highest grossing movie of all time. It’s only been out a few weeks. Ergo, Cameron in a recent appearance on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? (via THR) said the final two movies are going ahead.

“It looks like just with the momentum that the film has now that will easily pass our break even in the next few days. So it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this, I’m gonna have to do these other sequels,” Cameron said (with presumably some feigned reluctance, given his obvious dedication and enthusiasm for his franchise).

“I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years. The point is, we’re going to be okay. I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for Avatar 3, which is already in the can – we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film. So we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic. And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written. We even have some of 4 in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”

Avatar: The Way of Water will continue to climb higher on that all time list. Unless of course there is some unexpected drop off. Where it finishes is anyone’s guess for now? There’s no doubt given the budget of these movies, they need to make extraordinary sales. However fans are seemingly in love with the visuals once again. I mean let’s face it, if you are going to watch them, you watch them in 3D in theatres. I therefore have little doubt Avatar 3 will do as well as The Way of Water has.

Still not seen the sequel yet, but I am going within the next couple weeks for certain.
