It may come as no surprise to all of you that Captain Marvel is poised to play a big role in the MCU. That’s been the scuttlebutt for years now. Although her first movie generally doesn’t rank high on a lot of Marvel lists, the character has a lot of potential. With her second film, Captain Marvel 2, set to hit July of 2022, many are expecting a Secret Invasion storyline. Given the Skrulls were introduced in her first movie, it does seem like a natural progression.

However, according to a new rumor from MCU Cosmic, there are bigger plans in store for the movie. The outlet states that Captain Marvel 2 will lay the groundwork for a New Avengers film. Interestingly enough, they state it will help set a new status quo in the same way that Captain America: Civil War laid the groundwork for Avengers: Infinity War. And as an added bit of goodness, whoever ends up directing Captain Marvel 2 may have an opportunity to direct New Avengers. 

But, of course, that isn’t a guarantee. One other rumor the outlet throws out there is that there’s another name in the hat to direct New Avengers. This name isn’t revealed, but apparently, it would be a fan favorite director with connections to Spider-Man.

So…who could this be? Could it be Sam Raimi, who is currently on deck to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Or could it be Jon Watts, who directed the two MCU-set Spider-Man films? It’s not clear what the connection is between the director and Spider-Man, but it’s an odd thing to pull. They do, however, go on to say that a lot of this is too far out to say for sure, so we’ll have to wait and see.

As far as this rumor’s reliability, I’d say take most of it with a grain of salt at this point. It’s not because I don’t believe them. Jeremy Conrad, the author of this piece, has a fairly decent track record. However, there are a lot of moving pieces in the MCU. Even if a lot of this stuff is currently true, it can all change at a moment’s notice. I, for one, believe what he’s hearing, but am unsure whether or not it will all hold true down the line once the movies hit.

But, of course, Marvel Studios is a machine. They have their process down like no one else. So perhaps they really do have their ducks in a row far enough down that they know Captain Marvel 2 will lead into New Avengers. As with all rumors, we’ll have to wait and see, but I do think this is one to be keeping an eye on.
