Captain Marvel Breaks $400 Million Domestically

Believe it or not, there have only been 34 movies to break the $400m mark for the domestic box office. Out of those only six were released before the year 2000. Seven are MCU films, five are Star Wars films, and the majority fall in the genres popular amongst geeks. Captain Marvel is now the latest movie to make the milestone with an estimated total of $400,026,133 at the close of business today. I was incredibly wrong about this movie’s take back when I made a prediction in December. I really thought it’d make less than $800m worldwide and barely touch $300m domestic.

Just for fun, I looked up the adjusted for inflation totals and found Captain Marvel to be the 143rd movie in that respect. Of course, no one really considers adjustment for inflation unless they’re in a debate they’re losing. I understand the idea behind using those numbers, but there’s more to a movie’s take than just the cost of a ticket.

There were far fewer screens and far fewer theaters in the past. Additionally, there is more competition for your money today than 50 years ago. There’s also the time spent in theaters to consider. Avatar spent 238 days in release while Infinity War only had 140 and was out on home video for the last six weeks of its theatrical run.

I saw Captain Marvel twice in theaters, my wife couldn’t go to the first screening and found myself enjoying it enough that I gave it a solid B. It was a bit of a let down compared to other Phase 3 films, but it was not terrible.
