Captain Marvel Eyeing Huge $125M Opening

Controversies aside, Captain Marvel is on track to make some big bucks for Marvel Studios. Tracking for this movie has always been pretty high. After all, it is Marvel Studios’ first female-led superhero film and it is also the last movie to hit before audiences will be treated to Avengers: Endgame, so many will undoubtedly be heading out to make sure they’re up to date on all the goings-on in the MCU.

But how much is it set to make this weekend? According to a new report from THR, it’s on track to hit somewhere between $125 million and $145 million in North America alone. This is pretty much around what we were expecting (a few weeks back, they had it above $100 million but below $150 million), but there are apparently some experts who think $150 million or above is even possible.

It wouldn’t be the first time a Marvel Studios film overperformed. Last year, Black Panther set the box office on fire with over $200 million in its opening weekend. Captain Marvel doesn’t look to be breaking that amazing record, but it will likely take the prize as the second highest opening for a new character in the MCU (though I’d argue Black Panther wasn’t technically new since he played a substantial role in Civil War, but that’s me being really nitpicky).

Captain Marvel will also be opening in most major markets overseas save for Japan, and it’s expected to break $150 million there for a grand total nearing or exceeding $300 million in its opening weekend. Not a bad start!
