We think we’re so damn smart, don’t we? We thought we had it all figured out. Just under a month ago, we saw some Funko Pop figures from the upcoming Marvel Studios film Captain Marvel. In it, it looked like Jude Law’s secret character would be Yon-Rogg, who has a villainous history in the comics.

This went against all other previous rumors, which had Law pegged as Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel in the comic books, and who is partially responsible for Carol Danvers’ abilities in her origin story (at least until it was retconned). This was a unique twist for those of us who had been following this whole deal, but now it looks like we may have been right all along.

On the official Captain Marvel site, there is a brand-new image showing off Law alongside co-star Brie Larson, and in the caption, it reads “Jude Law as Mar-Vell, the leader of Starforce.” So, yeah. Unless this is the result of some ballsy intern going to town on this site, it looks like our initial impressions were completely spot-on. But what does this mean for the character going forward?

My personal assumption was that he would be a mentor character who goes bad in the film, ending up as the lead villain. With him being Mar-Vell, I have to wonder if they’d be willing to go that route. Marvel Studios has shown their willingness to skew from the source material on many occasions, so I wouldn’t rule it out, but it still feels just a tad less likely that Law will go bad now that we know he’s Mar-Vell.
