Captain Marvel: Two Directors Tapped To Helm Marvel Studios’ Female Superhero Film!

Not five hours ago, we reported on Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed letting slip that Marvel Studios had locked down a director for their upcoming female-centric superhero film, Captain Marvel.

For years now, we’ve known that Captain Marvel would be showing up in 2019, but one mystery that eluded us was that almighty director. Of course, given the sheer number of films on their Phase 3 slate, there was no way they’d have anyone in mind to direct back when they first announced it. As one of the last films on this slate, they had a ton of other films to get through first. However, being that it’s 2017, there was no mistaking that now was around the time they’d need to have someone locked down.

Now, thanks to Variety, we officially know who it is. According to the outlet, we’re not getting one, but TWO directors for Captain Marvel. The two in question are Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the duo behind the film Mississippi Grind. The two filmmakers also co-wrote 2006’s Half Nelson — which Fleck directed solo. The two also have a hand in television, most recently the Showtime series Billions

In true Marvel Studios fashion, this is not a pair that would have normally come to your average film fan’s mind. Rather than go by heat like Warner Bros, Marvel has a tendency to look at character-focused directors with experience on smaller projects. In their minds, if they can direct a $5 million film, they can direct a $150 million film.

Had this been Marvel Studios at the start of its run, I may be more doubtful at the prospect of these two helming such a huge project, but the reality is that their strategy has been tried and true thus far. It worked for James Gunn, Peyton Reed, and the Russo Brothers, so we’re interested to see what vision Boden and Fleck bring to the equation.

Writing the script for Captain Marvel are Inside Out scribe Meg LeFauve and Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman. It’s unclear if the new writing duo have any input on the script, but if the past is any indication, they’ll have at least some say into what goes on screen.
