Cassandro Trailer Follows The Real-Life Luchador Who Brought Exotico to Light

Gael Garcia Bernal in Cassandro

Mexican has a long history with luchadors in the wrestling business. In this Mexican wrestling world, exotico (luchador performing in drag) also mark as a big part of the professional wrestling circuit. In the upcoming film Cassandro, it follows one luchador in pursuit of finding success in the wrestling arena.

The film stars Gael Garcia Bernal as Cassandro. Other cast members include Roberta Colindrez, Perla De La Rose, Joaquin Cosio, and Raul Castillo, with special appearances from El Hijo del Santo and Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio. Roger Ross Williams directed the film from the screenplay by David Teague and Williams.

Here is the official synopsis:

Saul Armendariz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso, rises to international stardom after he creates the character ‘Cassandro,’ the “Liberace of Lucha Libre.” In the process, he upends not just the macho wrestling world, but also his own life. It is based on the true story.

I’ve seen this film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and this is a terrific performance for Gael Garcia Bernal. There will be some buzz and recognition as the awards qualifying season starts next month.

Cassandro is in select theaters on September 15. It follows with a streaming date on Prime Video on September 22.
