Cats Director Responds To Backlash Of Cat Designs

You know, I don’t know anything about the musical Cats and I don’t plan on seeing the movie any time soon, but I still respect the hell out of the movie, which is currently sitting at around 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. It takes a confident filmmaker to follow through on the vision that Tom Hooper is bringing to this thing, and you really have to respect the studio actually allowed him to follow through with something like this.

In a world where we often complain of things being too safe and samey, this is an incredibly bold and unexpected creative decision. I appreciate that they settled on that terrifying look of the cats themselves…but what does director Tom Hooper have to way?

“I didn’t think it was going to be a big deal, and it was obviously much more of a big deal than I thought,” Hooper told EW. “Reading some of the commentary was pretty entertaining.”

But he apparently didn’t sit back once he heard the response. After that first trailer dropped, they went back and changed the overall designs slightly, in hopes of making it more palatable. That being said, I can’t say I think he understands what it is audiences find terrifying, as he said they focused on bringing out the human features in the cats.

“I think probably my original dream to use a lot of the human face had gotten perhaps a bit lost in that process of rushing to make that first trailer,” he said. “I really concentrated on bringing back the actors’ faces because when you’ve got Ian McKellen or Judi Dench or Taylor Swift, why would you not want to? I don’t know if that’s what the comments were asking for, but what I took from it was that I needed to reconnect with my original plan and make sure I was delivering on that.”

Either way, it doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference with critics, as it has been lambasted online, but I’m at least interested to see how different the cats look from that first trailer.
