“Let’s get it on.”
MTV Studios is looking to revive Celebrity Deathmatch, the once-popular adult claymation series that pitted celebrities against one another in brutal fights to the death. The show originally aired back in the late-90s to the early-2000s and was revived for a couple of seasons back in 2006 for MTV2. A few years back, it was reported that the same network would be reviving the show, but nothing really came of that.
Now, it sounds like a revival will actually be happening, this time with series creator Eric Fogel executive producing alongside Ice Cube, who will also star in the series. Its actual release seems to be pending in 2019 in terms of specifics, but it’s stated it will be available via an SVOD or network partner…details to come, I guess.
“We’re excited to grow our partnership with Ice Cube and Cube Vision to reimagine this fan favorite,” said Chris McCarthy, president of MTV, VH1 and CMT. “Deathmatch was the meme before memes, remains a hot topic on social media and will be a smart, funny way to tackle the over-the-top rhetoric of today’s pop culture where it belongs – in the wrestling ring.”
As a kid, Celebrity Deathmatch was totally my shit. Between its mix of lowbrow humor and claymation gore, it was the perfect show for a typical preteen. I’d be up for giving this another go. But what do you think?
