Charlize Theron says she has no clue when or if her MCU character will return. Sadly, this gives an insight into some of the issues which plagued Marvel’s Phase 4. In my humble opinion, Marvel’s Phase 4 of the MCU had many issues. However, for me, the main one was the desire to introduce so many characters and teases and yet seemingly have no plan for where to take them next.
Suddenly we are not following our lead Avengers any longer, and that’s fine. However, instead of focusing on the secondary team members only, there was also a ton of brand new characters introduced. Some in their own shows or movies, but many more just as cameos, or teases for what’s to come. One such character was Charlize Theron’s Clea, who showed up only in the post credit scenes of Multiverse of Madness. The fact Theron is a massive star, you’d think Marvel had a clear plan for Clea. Yet, as you can see in the video below, or the transcript, Theron seems to have no idea.
I asked @CharlizeAfrica about her Marvel future and things got awkward. Not really. Well kinda. pic.twitter.com/OLR5W389gZ

“I haven’t gotten a call. Is that bad?” Theron told MTV reporter Josh Horowitz during the “Fast X” premiere in Rome. When pressed on the issue, the star assured Horowitz that she wasn’t lying three times then made a joke that he should cut her answer.
“No, that’s what we’re running,” Horowitz quipped back.
Marvel’s Issues Post Endgame
It doesn’t feel like Theron is doing the Andrew Garfield routine here. It sounds instead like she was told to wait for a phone call as to what comes next and it hasn’t happened. Surely you’d think there must be a clear plan for Doctor Strange 3, that involved Clea? Yet, you’d think Marvel would signpost that to Theron? Instead it seems like Clea was set up as a possible route which they may choose not to use. Stars are currently quite happy to dip their toes into the MCU when asked. However, Marvel will eventually start to annoy the stars by leaving them waiting for a call one day. Especially now that the box office is starting to slow down. If no one ever decides to place Clea back in, it becomes both a pointless tease and a waste of a great actor.
Remember Doctor Strange teases Mordo as the villain of the next movie. However, Mordo didn’t really feature other than an alt version from another Multiverse. That annoyed a lot of fans already. The general feeling I pick up from fans is that Marvel has teased so much now that they can never truly pay it off and keep Phase 5 coherent.
So will Clea, and Theron be back for Doctor Strange 3? Honestly I’m not sure if we can answer that? It depends who comes in with a pitch for the third movie that gets approved by Marvel. Sure, that pitch may feature Clea heavily. However, Feige and co. may fall in love with a pitch that is struggling to fit the character in.

All of this also speaks to the fact that there was too much happening in Phase 4. When you expand a franchise you need to do two things. Widen, which Marvel did well, and deepen, which Marvel hasn’t done well in Phase 4 and 5 so far, outside of Guardians 3. Now it seems the MCU juggernaut will be slowing down and focusing on quality over quantity. This has to be a good thing, but at the same time Marvel needs to look at everyone they have and attempt to try and tie some of these characters together. While you’re at that Marvel, can you let mega star Charlize Theron know when she’s coming back and that she does have a future in the MCU?
Charlize Theron says she has no clue when or if her MCU character will return. Do you agree with me that this is an example of the problems Marvel has caused for themselves in Phase 4? Thoughts below as always.
