China lets in superheroes again. Three movies are about to get a box office boost by being released in the Chinese territory which had previously refused to release any of the recent comic book movies. For Marvel, it has been revealed that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will get a Chinese release, as will (unreleased anywhere yet) Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Sadly this all came too late for Black Adam. However his nemesis from the comics Shazam: Fury of the Gods will also get a Chinese release which should boost that movies box office potential.

The global box office revenue is just starting to recover following the pandemic. However China’s ban on certain movies has prevented revenue going back to what it was before. I’m sure both Disney and WB will be happy these movies are getting that extra boost.
Of course it remains to be seen how popular the aforementioned movies will be? However opening in a territory as big as China should certainly make a dent.

Overall this is likely good news if you are a shareholder of either company. As for the rest of us poor people, I assume people likely don’t give two hoots. However overall better revenue is good for the studios and that usually means higher quality movies being made.
What we cannot say for certain is whether China will start allowing all superhero movies to show? Or, whether the nation will continue to be selective on which movies it chooses to show? We could go on all day about the censorship in China, so I won’t bother going there again. At the end of the day it’s up to the Chinese people to start telling their government they want the same entertainment as the rest of the world gets. That’s not easy though under such a regime.
